  • What is required for me to sell scrap metal toMcNichols Scrap Iron & Metal?

All customers must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid state or federally issued picture I.D. You are also required by state law to provide a thumbprint and to sign a declaration stating that you haven’t been convicted of a scrap theft related crime and are fully authorized to sell your material to us. You also must drive in and out of our scrap yard in a vehicle with up-to-date and valid license plate tags.

  • What form of payment can I expect for my scrap?

We pay cash through an automated teller dispenser, check, or voucher.

Public Act 99 of 2014 requires scrap metal facilities in the State of Michigan to adhere to certain payment restrictions concerning specific materials including but not limited to: Copper Wire, Copper Piping, Air Conditioning Components, Catalytic Converters. For these items, if a total of $25 or more is sold in a single day, the payment must be mailed to the address on your valid ID. If you are registered as a commercial/industrial customer, you will be exempt, from this requirement. Please visit our commercial/industrial tab on this website for more information

  • I need pick-up service. Do you offer this?

Yes, we have roll-off container services available for large commercial accounts. We do not however, provide residential pick-up.

  • Is assistance provided if I need help unloading material at the yard?

We have cranes, hi-lo’s, and loaders to help with heavy material. We also have an experienced and friendly staff available to help unload and identify your material.

  • Can I sell any items that have Freon in them?

Yes. Mcnichols Scrap Iron & Metal Co has the equipment and capability to recover freon from all white goods, AC units, and any other CFC bearing item. We only accept items that are still intact; lines must not be cut; compressors must be attached to the unit. If you would like to separate these items from your unit, proof of CFC recovery must be provided before selling. Mcnichols Scrap will inspect your material before you are weighed in for unloading.

  • Do you offer certified weight tickets for vehicles and trailers?

Yes, we can provide certified weight tickets. There is a $7 fee for this service unless you are a registered customer or are doing a move for the armed forces.

  • What is the best way to alert scrapyards if there has been a theft to my metal property?

First, you must file a police report and get a case number. Then, if you visit the website www.scraptheftalert.com you will be prompted to fill out a form. This website is the industry recognized database that most quickly informs scrapyards across the region about reported material theft.

  • When can I bring my scrap in?

    Our hours are:

Monday – Friday: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm**

    Saturday – Sunday: Closed

**Please note – You must be in the yard no later than 4:00pm Monday – Friday

  • Do you require a junk license to sell scrap?

Although we don’t require a scrapping or junk license to sell scrap, the City of Detroit has recently been targeting people transporting scrap materials. City code does state that a junk license is required in order to scrap in Detroit. Most of the public is recycling private property and should not be subject to the license requirement. But, if you scrap often and drive around looking for material, it can save you a lot of time, money and aggravation if you obtain a license.

Please see attached form for City of Detroit junk license procedure
